Coming Up With Ideas

Ideas: this is what we have found the hardest to come up with at times.
So how have we gone about solving this?

Methods that have worked for us:
Working in groups.
Working with a partner.
Taking some initial ideas then developing these even further by class discussion.
Giving feedback to each other and other groups.
Producing our outcome so we can see what needs developing if we made our outcome again.

Food Technology

WELCOME TO TAUPAKI FOOD TECHNOLOGY

After an initial introduction to the Food Technology room, students learn how to prepare and cook a variety of dishes both safely and hygienically. During this time they are introduced to a range of equipment that will enable them to develop food preparation and cooking techniques such as peeling, chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, baking, grilling and boiling.
As student’s knowledge and understanding of ingredients progress, they are introduced to developing their own design brief. A stakeholder is identified, their needs are explored and a list of specifications is established to ensure their outcome will be fit for purpose. Once their outcome is produced, students evaluate and reflect on areas that could be improved and their own recipe is then developed. This will result in a range of quick, tasty recipes which students are able to share with their family at home.

FOLLOW US ON OUR JOURNEY AS WE DEVELOP NEW AND EXCITING NEW OUTCOMES.

Writing a Brief

We have been learning how to write a brief. At times we really struggled with this.

Our brief includes:
  • A conceptual statement: explaining what we are going to make, who it is for, why we are being asked to produce this outcome and any other relevant details.
  • Our attributes
  • Our specifications to make sure our outcome will be fit for purpose

We worked on developing our first brief together as a class. At this stage we were introduced to many new technological words which we would soon begin to use on a regular basis.

Once we had mastered this we then went on to develop our own brief.

Seasonal Foods

FUN WITH SEASONAL FOODS

Just some of the ways we had fun using a seasonal food.

We learnt how we stew apples and created a crumble to to go on top to give a crunchy texture.

Another way we used our apples, was with using pastry and making up a yummy combination of other seasonal foods and spices to create an apple plait.

Biscuits

This week was a chance for us to design something sweet. (Yum!)
We worked through the stages of the design process to make a batch of biscuits then from here to develop a prototype of our own new type of biscuit. We had to see what role the ingredients played in our recipe so we could decide which ones had to be the same in our new recipe and which could be changed. Once we had this information our job was to develop our prototype. In the photos you will see both the original and also the prototype.

Here are some of the results:

Some clever biscuit makers emerged from this exercise.

Potatoes

This week we had an amazing challenge given to us:

Our challenge from the potato industry was:

to take a potato and turn it into a complete meal with    maximum taste and nutrition that must be quick to prepare and not expensive to make.

We looked at how to develop our brief, beginning with writing our conceptual statement, listing           the attributes our outcome would have and then from here giving our specifications. Our specifications would help us to see if our outcome was "fit for purpose" at the completion.
So away we went.
We really enjoyed experimenting with our ingredients.

Pizza

This week we worked through the design process and designed a new pizza for a specific purpose. We learnt about lots of new technological language - brief, stakeholder, attributes etc. This was all pretty new to us but we will get more experience with this as we make our way through the next few lessons. Here are some of our results: we had some interesting shapes produced.
